Frequently Asked Questions
Here you are, visiting this site and you are struck by one or more questions. Well, you’re in luck. We have pre-answered the following questions for just such an emergency:
Who maintains this site?
Why do you do this?
Why are there two maps for some rides?
Why do you care about mile-markers so much?
This is cool. How could I contribute to this site?
I rode on one of these rides and it was much harder than I thought?
and much more….
Who maintains this site?
We do.
Why do you do this?
To make it easier to plan rides, to learn about new loops, to raise awareness about bicycling in and around Madison, WI. And, it is fun.
Why are there two maps for some rides?
The maps from http://www.gmap-pedometer.com/ generate mile-markers automatically. Unfortunately, I haven’t found an easy way to embed them in the posts about the rides. The maps from the Routes plugin for WordPress are easy to embed and roll-up into a master map. Unfortunately, I haven’t figured out how to get them to display mile-markers.
Why do you care about mile-markers so much?
To make it easier to plan group rides (e.g. “Hey, let’s meet-up at the coffee shop at that’s between mile-marker 1 and 2 on the Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy Ride”) and to make it easier to talk about the rides (e.g. “there is a really steep hill at mile 3 but fortunately a bus comes by every 15 minutes”)
This is cool. How could I contribute to this site?
It is a three step process: (1) Sign up for an account using the Registration form. (2) Use the Contact Us form to tell us that you want to contribute. (3) We will contact you and work out the details from there.
Could I get paid to contribute to this site?
Ha, ha ha ha! Funny boy/girl/other.
I rode on one of these rides and it was much harder than you said it would be?
All rides are easy when you do them in the support van.
Do you provide a support van?
No. We keep asking our spouses but they refuse to follow us around at 18 MPH.
Do you set-up organized rides?
Only if you count using IM to say, ‘Hey, let’s meet-up at the coffee shop at that’s between mile-marker 1 and 2 on the Happy, Happy, Joy, Joy Ride’ as “setting-up an organized ride”.
I hurt myself on one of your routes.
We are very sorry and we hope you have a speedy recovery. Of course, safety is of the up-most importance to all of us. Do not ride any route you do not know – you could get lost or find yourself in a dangerous car-filled situation. Do not ride any route that is above your current fitness level – you could get tired or injured. There are cars on these routes. Ride responsibly. Use bathrooms. Check with your doctor before you take up any physical activity especially if your current “sport” involves brats and the TV remote. You, and only you, are responsible for yourself and your risk management.
I don’t wear a helmet when I ride.
